A HOME WITHIN A HERITAGE CHURCH – BUILDING A UNIQUE SOLUTION.

Designed by Bates Smart, Inner House involved the construction of a new 500m2 single dwelling within the auditorium of the former First Church of Christ Scientists. Because the internal features of the building as well as the facade are heritage listed, Bates Smart’s design had to avoid any permanent change to the building. This brought a unique set of constraints to the project.

The heritage internal features and facade required minor restoration works throughout the build.

  • Total project was delivered in less than 17 weeks and featured non-permanent internal structures that can be completely reversed and removed if required
  • Winner: 2012 Master Builders Association of NSW Excellence in Housing Award Adaptive Re-use <$2M
  • Winner: 2012 Australian Institute of Architects National Award
  • Build completed in partnership with Arcon Projects.
